GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Development Intern will perform research and project coordination on various economic development and/or public space activation efforts, as well as event planning for various programs hosted by the Ballard Alliance. The intern will support efforts related to the implementation of the Ballard Commons Park Improvement Plan. While specific projects will be assigned to this position, there will also be opportunities for the selected intern to identify and implement an initiative of their creation that fits within the context of community development.

SUMMARY OF THE JOB DESCRIPTION:

This entry-level position is in the Facilitation and Public Involvement (F&PI) department. The PRR F&PI team plans and implements public involvement strategies that help clients build public and political support for infrastructure projects or public policies; achieve consensus on challenging or controversial issues; and meet local, state, and federal requirements for public involvement.

The purpose of this job is to complete tasks as assigned by F&PI project managers. This includes coordinating and staffing public meetings and outreach activities; conducting research; taking meeting notes and developing meeting summaries; and editing content and coordinating graphics for fact sheets, display boards, and presentations in support of a variety of community outreach and public involvement activities.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Zero Waste Washington seeks a Community Outreach and Policy Coordinator with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Candidates for this position will require the capacity to work one-on-one with community members, help develop and implement community education events and activities, and work with partner organizations and decision makers.

Zero Waste Washington is seeking an individual with strong analytical, decision-making, creative, interpersonal, organizational, and communication (written, verbal, visual) skills, and who speaks fluent Spanish. Knowledge of sustainability and/or environmental science and policy is a plus, but not a requirement. Qualified applicants must be able to communicate effectively to diverse groups and have a commitment to both racial and social equity and environmental stewardship. Additionally, qualified applicants must have the ability to be flexible, handle multiple assignments at one time, work well with people, and be available for regular meetings and events in Tacoma and other areas of the state, including occasional nights and weekends. This position reports to the Executive Director and is based in downtown Seattle, WA. ROADMAP TO WASHINGTON’S FUTURE

WHAT:

WA State biennium budget funded an effort by the Ruckelshaus Center to manage the “Road Map” project that will gauge public opinion regarding planning issues in Washington. The results of these sessions will be used to examine current planning laws and possible changes to them.

The first step of the Roadmap project will be to conduct focused workshops in which invited participants will identify key values, objectives and ideas regarding planning in the state. Students will attend preparatory classes about Growth Management Act concepts and facilitation practices and then will assist senior staff in conducting one or more workshops and summarizing the results.

TIME:

· Classes: 4:30 to 6:30 PM, Tuesdays
· Help prepare for and facilitate a one day workshop and assist in documenting results

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS:

·2 UDP academic credits
· The opportunity to work and network with high level professionals, policy makers and activists
· A real-world, resume building experience.
· Increased facilitation and communication skills based on actual participation in workshops.
