Job Opportunity – Data/GIS Intern, City of Seattle

Position Description:
Seattle Department of Transportation is seeking an Undergraduate or Graduate level student intern to work with the Street Use Division’s GIS and Data team and HUB coordination program. This position will assist a team of 3 GIS and Data professionals by helping organize program files, align processes, provide maps and analysis for Street Use needs.

Education benefit to the student:

  • Student will gain experience working in enterprise systems.
  • Skills using ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online, Microsoft SharePoint Online, and Office 365.
  • Working with the public and with a diverse team with rapidly changing objectives.
  • Job Responsibilities:

  • Respond to assigned map requests and maintain data systems from Street Use Division.
  • Maintain file management system and assist with file cleanup efforts.
  • Assist workgroups, train others on new systems, manage distribution lists, and respond to urgent needs.
  • Research and find solutions for program weak points.

    Sustainability Studio Student Presentations

    This term’s topic is Socially Responsible Purchasing.
    This year’s presentations will run from 11:30 am to 1:20 pm on December 8 in the Wallace Hall Commons.

    This term’s projects/client partners include:

    Supplier Diversity at UW – who are we missing?

  • Team assessed current supplier partnerships at UW, looking at where and who our WMBE contracts are – or are not – and why
  • Logos and Certifications – How much do they matter?

  • Team designed and implemented a UW-wide survey to examine perceptions of different “green” certifications, and how this effects purchasing decisions across campus
  • Two teams working with the City of Auburn to develop their Buy Local Program

  • The City of Auburn is launching its Buy Local Program to increase awareness of local business offerings and to help keep money within the community
  • Teams focused around data collection and marketing/design for the program
  • Be a Good Dawg marketing team

  • Be a Good Dawg is a new program with UW Office of Sustainability that is focused around individuals making more sustainable purchasing decisions, being involved in local community events, and being a mindful consumer of energy, resources, etc.
  • Team developed a matrix of marketing and outreach opportunities (and developed initial outreach materials)
  • SafeFlame – starting a startup

  • SafeFlame is a company currently developing safer stoves for residents in Guinea. All stoves use locally-available materials and drastically reduce indoor smoke levels
  • Team worked tested oven prototypes, examined funding opportunities, partnerships, and grants, and developed social media materials for SafeFlame
  • CAUSE Leadership Academic 2017 – Applications Open!

    CAUSE (Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based organization with a mission to advance the political empowerment of the Asian Pacific American community through voter registration and education, community outreach, and leadership development.

    We are looking for students to apply for our summer internship program called CAUSE Leadership Academy (CLA) . The CAUSE Leadership Academy (CLA) was founded in 1991 in order to develop a pipeline of leadership for the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. CLA teaches students the importance of civic engagement and political participation as it prepares its participants to be leaders at the forefront of the democratic process.

    Duration: June 19, 2017 – August 18, 2017 (9 weeks)
    Time Commitment: Must be able to commit full time for 40 hours per week. Additional hours to work on a group project will also be required. The number of additional hours will depend on collaborative group efforts.
    Stipend: A stipend of $1,500 will be provided upon satisfactory completion of the program and will serve as reimbursement for expenses accrued throughout the program’s duration.
    Housing: Accepted interns are required to secure their own housing in Southern California for the duration of their internship. Interns are highly encouraged to seek housing opportunities together.

    The Husky Leadership Initiative wanted to let you know about two leadership development opportunities happening this winter quarter: the Emerging Leaders Retreat and our Leadership Firesides course (GEN ST 391 I). Please see below for details, and contact us at uwhli@uw.edu with any questions.

    EMERGING LEADERS RETREAT
    Are you hoping to explore your leadership potential? Are you looking to make more connections and create impact during the rest of your time at the UW? Consider this unique opportunity.
    This off-campus weekend retreat is designed to help students:

  • Build connections and relationships with other students
  • Explore ways in which to define and practice leadership
  • Develop strategies for transforming communities at the UW
  • Challenge themselves through experiential (indoor and outdoor) exercises in teamwork and collaboration
  • The 2017 Emerging Leaders Retreat will take place February 3-5. Participants are expected to be present for the entirety of the retreat. The retreat will be free for all partcipants, including lodging, transportation and meals. The group will depart from campus by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 2/3 and will return to campus by 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, 2/5.

    Husky Leadership Initiative Leadership Firesides offer ongoing opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue with a diverse range of civic, corporate and campus leaders in an informal setting. These leaders share their personal journeys, perspectives on leadership and lessons they have learned about working with and influencing others towards positive change. This course will offer students an opportunity to take a deep dive into the Firesides series and apply these lessons to their own lives. Registered students will attend the weekly Leadership Firesides, participate in an introductory session (Week 1) and a closing session (Week 10) and submit weekly written reflections.

    Biophilic Design Internship

    BACKGROUND + SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

    The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) seeks an exceptional intern to support the Biophilic Design Initiative. ILFI is a creative, high-impact organization whose mission is to lead and support the transformation toward communities that are socially just, culturally rich and ecologically
    restorative.

    The successful candidate must have strong research and written communication skills, pay close attention to detail, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment. A demonstrated passion to and understanding of Biophilic Design is crucial.

    This job is a 9-month temporary position with the potential of renewal based on funding. This position will be located in ILFI’s Seattle office at the Bullitt Center in order to engage directly with ILFI’s CEO. Compensation is commensurate with experience, will be paid hourly, and includes sick time. Health and dental insurance will be fully covered by the Institute.

    Job Opportunity – Administrative Assistant, MICEC City of Mercer Island

    The Mercer Island Community and Event Center (MICEC) Administrative Assistant is a vital position that uses a variety of customer service skills to support the administrative functions of the Mercer Island Community and Event Center and Parks & Recreation Department as a whole. The MICEC Administrative Assistant is responsible for supporting three general areas for the MICEC: 1) Administrative Duties; 2) Analysis and Reporting; and 3) Customer Service.
