Job Opportunity – Ecology Assistant Coastal Planner

This position will work with me to complete the 2017-2018 FEMA Coordinating Technical Partnership scope of work – focused on supporting the improvement of statewide hazard management along our coast, including flooding, erosion, landslides, and tsunamis. Responsibilities include collaboration with the interagency Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning (Risk MAP) team to understand coastal hazards and develop strategies to reduce risk. This position also conducts research to provide mitigation options for communities through the collection and dissemination of best practices.

ONLINE MARKETING INTERN
Our online marketing intern will focus on ramping up our online store and digital marketing efforts this fall. It’s a great position for anyone thinking about (or already working on!) an online shop of their own. Responsibilities may include any of the following:

Internship Opportunities – SER-UW Native Plant Nursery

SER-UW Native Plant Nursery Internships

SER-UW is a student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration, an international organization that works to “promote ecological restoration as a means of sustaining the diversity of life on Earth and re-establishing an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture.” SER-UW manages several restoration sites on campus, as well as a native plant nursery located at the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH). The nursery is a fully student run operation that houses several thousand individual plants and over one hundred different species native to the Puget Sound. Our mission is to provide a local source of native plants for student projects and our on-campus restoration sites, to educate students on best nursery practices for sustainable native plant production, and to continue to improve those practices through research and collaboration with students and community partners.

Request for internship applicants:
The native plant nursery is seeking undergraduate student interns for autumn quarter. Interns are expected to devote an average of 9 hours a week to nursery projects. In conjunction with the manager, interns will develop learning objectives based on individual interests and strengths, receiving credit for ESRM 399 or their school’s equivalent. The interns’ time will be split between routine plant maintenance, plant propagation, nursery infrastructure projects, helping with weekly volunteer work parties, and individual projects. Each intern will have a different focus to help tackle the many and diverse needs of a native plant nursery. Intern position descriptions are as follows:

Communications Interns:
Will work on increasing volunteer involvement with outside groups, produce written content for newsletters, social media, and advertising, and assist with the coordination of our fall plant sale.

Plant Propagation and Production Interns:
Will assist in the development of a seed and plant provenance database and will help in the design and implementation of a crop planning schedule for the upcoming production season.

Both Interns are expected to:

● be willing to get dirty, get wet, and work in all weather conditions

● be on time and follow directions closely

● work well with fellow interns and co-managers, and be comfortable working independently

● problem solve and know when to ask for help

● work well with volunteers- be available for weekly volunteer work parties

● be able to lift 40 lbs and walk on uneven terrain

The Authority’s Planning Division leads a wide variety of innovative transportation planning studies and policy analyses. The Planning staff is currently working on several on-going initiatives including ConnectSF, an update to the City’s long-range transportation plan program, and the Treasure Island Mobility Management Program. Our work program also includes projects that study the future use of the transit and freeway networks in San Francisco as they relate to growth in the city, and projects that advance transportation demand management, policy and funding development.

KEY DETAILS:
Employee Type: Intern/Temporary Employee
Reports to: Transportation Planner
Availability: Candidates may be considered for full- and/or part-time internships. Interns should be available to work at least 20 hours per week (maximum 40) during regular business hours. This recruitment is for internships beginning in both the Fall and Winter.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong interest in urban transportation planning is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Proficiency with ArcGIS, database management, graphic design software, statistical analysis, and/or the Drupal content management system for web sites is desired.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Standard transportation planning principles, methods, and processes; basic research methods, survey design, and database management techniques; ability to interpret data using appropriate planning methods and statistical techniques; familiarity with land use planning methods; strong written and oral communication skills; ability to prepare and present written reports and recommendations.

Additional relevant skills and abilities are also encouraged. These include experience with travel demand modeling, traffic modeling, project funding, and/or civil engineering.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
Prospective interns should have completed at least one semester in a relevant graduate level discipline (e.g. transportation planning, urban planning, civil engineering).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The physical demands and work environment are characteristic of modern office work and include moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic), and are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Register for EPA’s 6th Annual Campus RainWorks Challenge

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is launching its sixth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition that is open to colleges and universities across the country. EPA seeks to engage with students to foster a dialogue about responsible stormwater management, and showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices.

Registration for the 2017 Challenge is open from September 1st through the 30th. Student teams must register in order to submit their entries by December 15th. Winners will be announced in the Spring of 2018. Each first-place team will earn a student prize of $2,000 to be divided evenly among student team members and a faculty prize of $3,000 to support green infrastructure research or training. Second-place teams will win $1,000 for student teams and a $2,000 faculty prize.
