Diversity Leadership Conference

Registration is open now for the 2018 Diversity Leadership Conference: Understanding Self in the Context of Community.

This *FREE* half-day conference is open to all undergraduate students, and provides an opportunity for skill-building, connection with staff and community facilitators, and exploration of current and relevant leadership topics and concepts.

 

Students can elect to participate in the Leadership Workshop Track (rotating workshops, all levels and class years) or can apply to participate in theAdvanced Leadership Track (a more intensive 3-hour training led by UW staff, juniors and seniors preferred). Students who wish to participate in the Advanced Leadership Track must submit their application for participation by Monday, January 29 at 9:00 a.m. More information on the workshops and conference can be found on the Husky Leadership Initiative website.  The event will feature a keynote address from Dr. Alexes Harris (UW Department of Sociology), and will close with a networking reception featuring recent UW alumni (appetizers provided).

Grant Opportunity: SPU Waste-Free Communities Matching Grant

Seattle Public Utilities is now accepting applications for our new Waste-Free Communities Matching Grant, which funds community projects focused on waste prevention. Waste prevention means creating less waste by buying and using less, reusing items, and sharing or donating items so others can use them. By working together as a community to prevent waste, we can help the environment, protect public health, build community, and save money.

 

Grant program objectives:

  • Support community leadership and innovation around waste prevention
  • Increase community access to waste prevention benefits and opportunities
  • Reduce the amount of materials going to waste in Seattle

 

In addition to preventing waste, projects must do ONE or more of the following:

  • Be innovative: test or expand on new approaches or technologies
  • Engage one or more of the following communities: communities of color, immigrants, refugees, low-income, people with disabilities, seniors, young adults, youth, children, and/or small businesses
  • Help communities in need: such as providing free or low-cost resources or job training to homeless or low-income communities

 

Application Deadline: February 23, 2018 (applications may be submitted in-language and in print or video format)

Funding Amount: $2,000 – $15,000 per grant award

Match Requirement: 50% of grant award (in-kind or cash)

Student of Color Support and Empowerment Group

Student of Color Support and Empowerment Group
This is a support group for students of color who are often navigating a complex and difficult
college environment. The focus of this group is on creating a space for students of color to
connect over experiences of discrimination/oppression/racism, support one another, and gain
wisdom and energy from each other. Topics covered in the group will vary based on the
members’ preferences, but some examples include but are not limited to: microaggressions,
pressure to prove yourself, feeling like you don’t fit in, discrimination, first-generation college
student, family issues, and academic issues/concerns, romantic relationships, sexism, racism,
imposter syndrome, stereotype threat, self-awareness, self-esteem, emotional health issues
and other stressors related to being a person of color in this university environment.

Fremont Brewing is hiring a full-time Event Coordinator based in Seattle responsible for Fremont’s participation in all national, local, and in-house events. The role of Event Coordinator is to ensure that Fremont is providing a professional, responsible, effective, and fun experience through events of all shapes and sizes.

Job Responsibilities & Expectations
• Serve as primary contact for all events that Fremont is participating in or organizing, completing all administrative work involved
• Represent Fremont at festivals and special events, maintaining a professional and appropriate demeanor at all times
• Manage Fremont’s Event Representative and six part-time Event Help members to ensure events are appropriately staffed
• Support Marketing & Events Manager on Fremont’s large, high profile events and sponsorships
• Support Marketing & Events Manager with development and execution of new, in-house events, managing budgets, vendors, permitting, etc.
• Oversee the maintenance of the Event Equipment area (jockey boxes, regulators, marketing materials, etc.)
• Manage the Events section of the Fremont Brewing website as well as our internal calendar, ensuring all information is accurate and up to date
• Provide ongoing input and ideas on how to improve our internal events and our presence at outside events
• Research and identify potential new events, regularly review all current events to determine if they are worth continuing
• Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned

Required Skills / Experience
• Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university, or equivalent work experience
• 2+ years of event coordination/management or related experience
• 1+ years in a leadership or supervisory position
• Strong computer skills (web-based email, Microsoft Office suite)
• Excellent project management skills, highly motivated, detail oriented, organized, focused, professional, and punctual
• Articulate and professional in written and verbal communication
• Critical thinker with proven problem-solving abilities
• A passion for craft beer and an outgoing personality that loves connecting with people
• Ability to stay calm under pressure and a general personal of awesomeness
• Ability to work onsite, travel, and work nights and weekends as needed for events
• Valid drivers license, squeaky-clean driving record, and access to a reliable car for transportation of event equipment
• Must be at least 21 years old

Preferred Skills / Experience
• Knowledge of the brewing process and draft systems
• Experience serving and talking about craft beer
• Ability to answer the question, “Why Does Beer Matter?”
• A class 12 server’s permit (must be obtained within 14 days of hire)
• Experienced and proven kitten tamer

Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand for long periods of time (8-10 hours)
• Ability to move heavy materials (lifting up to 55 pounds, moving up to 160 pounds)
• Ability to work in hot and cold environments

Come learn about a Summer 2018 (August/September) Study Abroad to Jordan about Water Resources and Treatment

Learn about the connections among water resources and water engineering in one of the most water-scare nations in the world, and be ready to be amazed.

Interact with Jordanian students, scientists, and engineers. Tour desalination plants on the Dead Sea. Hike through water ravines. Tour wastewater treatment plants designed to reuse water. Visit a dying oasis. View first-hand archeological sites with ancient water infrastructure, including the World Heritage UNESCO site of Petra.

This course is co-sponsored by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. It is led by UW faculty and counts as credits toward your UW degree. Both graduate and undergraduate options available.

During the information session, you will have opportunity to hear from students who have taken this course in the
past, and to meet the primary UW faculty instructor.
