Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for undergraduate study abroad is now open and accepting applications. Students can receive up to $8,000 for study abroad.  Students must be receiving a federal Pell grant through the Office of Student Financial aid to be eligible and be participating in an approved UW program of at least 21 consecutive days in length in a single host country.

Please reference our Events page for the latest schedule of offerings.  These sessions will cover eligibility, application components and tips for writing competitive essays.  The application deadline for students participating in summer, early fall, or autumn 2019 study abroad programs is Tuesday, March 5th at 9:59pm PST.

We are also offering a Gilman Scholarship Writing Lab to help students get their applications over the finish line.  It will be on Thursday, February 28th from 4:30-6:30 in the Ethnic Cultural Center Computer Lab.  This is a space for students to receive assistance on a drop-in basis.  There will be experts on hand to review drafts of essays, provide feedback and answer questions.  For those of you with social media pages, I’ve created a facebook event for the writing lab https://www.facebook.com/events/308926823021084/

 

Latinos and Planning Division Scholarship

About the Program

The Latinos and Planning Division (LAP) of the American Planning Association (APA) strives to address planning issues affecting Latino communities in the U.S. as well increase Latinos in the profession. The purpose of the LAP scholarship program is to foster increased interest in the study of urban planning within the Latino student population at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

The program is open to third and fourth year undergraduate students and first and second year masters degree students. One scholarship of $500 will be awarded to be used for fees, books, or academic materials.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible applicants shall be Latino students who intend to work as a practicing professional planner in the non-profit, public or private sector and are:

  • Must be currently enrolled in either of the following:
    • Third or fourth year undergraduate students in a planning program accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB).
    • or
    • First or second year graduate students in a planning program accredited by the PAB
  • Must be a student member of the Latinos and Planning Division at the time of the application submission deadline.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for the LAP scholarship shall submit all of the following:

  • 1 to 2-page personal and background statement written by the student, describing their interest in a career in planning and describing what impact the students wants to make in the planning field related to Latino communities or the profession;
  • One letter of recommendation from a professor, a community leader, or current or past employer in support of the student’s application and personal background statement.
  • Official transcript of current course of study (for current students) or a copy of an acceptance letter from a PAB-accredited graduate planning school (for incoming students); and
  • Resume of work experience and background.

An email verification of application receipt will be sent to the participant by the LAP Scholarship coordinator.

Husky Green Awards

Nominations are open for the Husky Green Awards, and we’d appreciate any help in spreading the word. We rely on nominations from the campus community to identify the winners of the Husky Green Awards, which recognize individuals and teams at the UW dedicated to sustainability. The deadline for these nominations is March 1.

Created by filmmaker Tomasz Biernacki, “Trickle Down Town” documents visits to homeless encampments and interviews not only with residents of encampments such as “Camp Second Chance,” but also those working to help move people from homelessness into permanent housing.

Jeanne Kohl Welles will be co-hosting this viewing with Council member Larry Gossett and the UW Law, Societies and Justice Department. They will be joined by Tomasz Biernacki for a post-viewing conversation that will include Sharon Lee, Executive Director of the Low Income Housing Institute; Timothy Harris, Executive Director and Founder of “Real Change” Newspaper; and Gordon McHenry, President & CEO of Solid Ground.

The Gilman Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship for undergraduate study abroad is now open for students participating in programs starting in summer, early fall, and fall 2019.   Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant through the Office of Student Financial Aid to be eligible. Events and Customer Outreach Intern, Summer 2019 through Summer 2020, full time summer and part time during the school year.

GENERAL PURPOSE: Sound Transit has an exciting year-long internship available! This is a great opportunity for currently enrolled undergraduate students who wants to observe and participate in real world application of their current field of study. This opportunity will allow the intern to gain valuable experience within the Events & Customer Outreach division under our Communications department, which handles agency special events, customer outreach initiatives, marketing campaigns, promotions and partnerships, media relations, social and digital media as well as graphic and video asset production.

The intern in this position will focus on all things events, from staffing booths and engaging with the public at festivals, employer transportation fairs, public open houses or service related street teams, to managing the collateral and database that supports customer outreach and events, to managing mascot appearances to maintaining the team’s master event calendar. Many projects and opportunities will arise from other teams within the department during the course of the internship and interns are encouraged to take on projects they have expertise in or would like to learn more about.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

An undergraduate student entering their junior or senior year with the following:

    • Familiarity with principles and practices of marketing, customer service and public relations.
    • Interest in marketing/communications, public policy, transportation, land use and environmental issues.
    • Experience with social media, computer applications and databases.
    • Confidence in developing and delivering presentations, ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
    • Strong interpersonal techniques in-person, by telephone and via e-mail and a consistent commitment and ability to work with diverse groups and individuals.
    • Ability to adapt to changing environments and to work on multiple project teams and subjects simultaneously.
    • Willingness to work night and weekend hours.
    • Washington State Driver’s License.

 

Potential projects:  

  • Assist Events & Customer Outreach by keeping a master calendar of events, helping pack materials and staffing the following types of appearances:
    • Information booths at open houses, community festivals and transportation fairs
    • Street teams at transit facilities
    • Agency special events
  • Schedule and support agency mascot, Zap Gridlock, for appearances.
  • Keep inventory of division’s collateral and promotional items, including brochures, fact sheets, handouts, giveaways and supplies, and update as needed.
  • Help with agency special event planning, including rider appreciation activities at transit facilities around the region.
  • Interact with the general public at the variety of events Sound Transit attends and plans, providing customer service and rider information and operating outreach engagement tools (photo booths, I-pad surveys, prize wheel games, social media contests, etc.).
  • Track division metrics by compiling data gathered during customer outreach activities, entering data into CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system and tracking ambassador staffing.
  • Lend a hand to other Communications teams including social media, marketing and promotions, digital communications, media relations and video production.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited four year university Bachelor’s Degree program in marketing, communications, public affairs or similar studies.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
  • Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery when visiting job sites during construction and when working in the field.
  • The Agency promotes a safe and healthy work environment and provides appropriate safety and equipment training for all personnel as required.
