Drop-In Mental Health Resources for Students in Spring Quarter

Here are the drop-in mental health resources for spring quarter.  These are FREE resources available for students.  No appointments necessary.  Students can just show up.  More information and flyers available via hyperlink.

Mindfulness meditation is a practice that helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression by cultivating greater self-awareness and a sense of inner peace.

  • Mindfulness for Anxiety, Depression and Trauma Workshop 2-2:45pm on several Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays for students’ convenience in 401 Schmitz Hall. This workshop by Caitlin Stanaway reviews the symptoms of generalized anxiety, major depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.  Participants can learn about Dialectical Behavior Therapy (focused on building skills in the areas of mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (focused on how thoughts, mood and behaviors interact).

Goals:

Increased understanding of mental health symptoms

Effective coping strategies to practice

Specifying personal goals and/or goals for treatment

  • Mental Health for the People workshop with Andrea Salazar on Friday 6/1 at 3pm in 401 Schmitz Hall.  This is a new quarterly workshop series is focused on mental health topics from a social justice perspective. The topic for spring quarter is The Impact of Colorism on Communities of Color
  •  Let’s Talk.  Drop-in consultation with a counselor, a collaboration between the Counseling Center and Hall Health Center

 Tuesdays 2-4pm with Iris Song at the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center

Wednesdays 2-4pm with Kate Fredenberg at the Q Center in the HUB

 Offered during the 10 weeks of each quarter.

Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates

 

Washington State University’s College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resources and the WSU Food Systems Program, proudly present this unique opportunity for undergraduates interested in careers in food systems. The Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates Internship (REEU).

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS for Sustainable High-Value Horticulture and Processing Systems Internships in Washington State.

Selected undergraduate fellows will be paired with a WSU Faculty mentor working in food systems for a 10 week summer internship, running May 29 through Aug 3. Fellows will learn valuable skills, participate in research and extension activities, and receive a generous stipend, travel support, and lodging.

The REEU Internship will commence with a 1 week symposium at the Quillisascut Farm School in Rice, WA, where students and faculty will explore food systems, production, processing, and research tools through hands-on activities. Interns will work independently throughout the summer on a research or extension project with the guidance of their mentor and, at the end of the internship period, present the results at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at WSU, Pullman, WA.

Six REEU Internships are available for Summer 2018. Applicants must complete and send applications by APRIL 20, 2018. Application materials should be sent directly to Herb Lengel, WSU CAHNRS Internship and Career Development Coordinator

Student Leadership Award

The UW’s Carlson Center is currently accepting applications for the Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award.  Named for one of Seattle’s foremost civic leaders, the Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award recognizes individual students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, provided outstanding leadership in the community, and who are committed to continued creative civic participation.

 

The Carlson Student Leadership Award recipient will receive $2500 and be honored at the Spring Celebration of Service & Leadership on May 23.

 

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

 

In order to be eligible for the Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award, candidates must be enrolled as a junior or senior at the University of Washington during the current academic year and working toward their first baccalaureate degree. The Award is open to students from all three University of Washington campuses.

Applications will be assessed on the extent to which a students’ conception and practice of civic leadership embodies the values of Social Responsibility, Commitment, Leadership, Creativity, and Collaboration.

The application deadline for the 2018 Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award is Monday, April 30 at 11:59PM. CoMotion Mary Gates Innovation Internship Program

The application for CoMotion Mary Gates Innovation Internship Program is due Monday, April 9, 2018 at 11:59pm! Each Innovation Scholar will receive a $5,000 scholarship and earn course credit.

 

Nine different internships are available this year, across a broad spectrum of engineering, bilingual learning and translation, health sciences, and natural sciences.
