CEP marks its 21st birthday with an exhibit in Gould Hall and a CEP Turns 21 celebration. The celebration reunites the more than 500 CEP alumni and inspires new energy for the future of the major. The full gallery can be found at our Facebook Page.

New Mission Statement and Core Values
Students agree by consensus to a new mission statement and set of core values. The new values are Practice, Intentionality, Personal Formation, Stewardship, and Communal Learning.
Evaluation of Grading Policy
After years of deliberation, CEP students modify the distinguishing assessment structure of the major, introducing, for the first time, the ability to be graded on the traditional 4.0 scale in core CEP courses rather than receiving credit/no credit and narrative evaluations. Students also vote to provide credit for Governance participation.
CEP Open House
CEP held its first EVER Open House on November 17, 2011.
Wayfinding Solutions in the Des Moines Marina District
A team of students develops a series of wayfinding solutions to address connectivity issues in the Des Moines Marina District.
Responsive Neighborhood Greenway Research
A team of CEP students worked for the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association, researching and planning a feasible neighborhood greenway responsive to future transit needs.
Passing the Torch Becomes Literal
Passing the torch from one cohort to the next becomes literal with a real torch that has continued to be passed down from cohort to cohort.
Migration to Digital Portfolios
The Migration to Digital Portfolios: CEP Senior Portfolios, a capstone requirement illustrating and synthesizing each student’s educational path, moves from its traditional physical format to an online, dynamic format.
Housing Affordability Project
Students present research findings regarding housing affordability in Ballard to the Neighborhood District Council, calling for increased dialogue with and participation from residents.
Budget Crisis
The recession urges students to investigate ways to use the CEP structure to improve job skills and readiness. State budget cuts prompt the Department of Urban Design and Planning to conduct a multi-year review of the CEP program. CEP students establish a two-year partnership with the Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment to conduct an Environmental Equity Survey on Seattle neighborhoods. Results are presented to Seattle City managers.
CEP Name Change
CEP changes its name to Community, Environment, and Planning to distinguish itself from the specific field of environmental planning.
10 Years and Counting… On Each Other
CEP celebrates its first 10 years at 10 Years and Counting… On Each Other- a celebration of excellence and innovation in undergraduate planning education.
University District Mural
As part of a junior project, a group of students worked with homeless youth to paint a mural behind University Methodist Church on 42nd and 15th. This project and two others involving the history of University Ave and a facade Improvement plan are presented to the community at the University..Read More
University District P-Patch
CEP maintains a plot at the University District’s community garden P-Patch, giving students a valuable co-working service-learning experience. CEP students also advocate for housing policy that fights homelessness, declaring November Housing, Homelessness, and Hunger month. CEP students bring together local activists and planners for a college-wide panel discussion on housing..Read More
First Senior Project Night
CEP hosts its first Senior Project Night, an annual event in which all students present their senior project work to an audience of professionals, alumni, students, and friends.
The CEP program forms a relationship with students in Port Elizabeth South Africa. In 2002 a group of students, called the Planning Corps, travel to Port Elizabeth to discuss urban planning topics related to both regions. First Strategic Plan
CEP creates its first Strategic Plan and begins an ongoing two-year planning cycle. The strategic plan refines the CEP mission and vision, builds continuity, and helps the major reach its long-term goals.
Creation of Stewards Council
CEP created the Stewards Council, comprised of alumni, students, and community members. The Council’s mission is to support the program by providing continuity, experience, vision, and new resources.
Recognition from the University

CEP doubles its size to 34 students in two cohorts.
Programmatic Review
CEP students, staff, and faculty conduct the first significant review of the major. The review identifies several strengths as well as areas requiring additional focus. These include Program Identity, Student Responsibility, and Program Evaluation.
First Graduating Class of CEPsters
The unofficial name of the founding class of 16 was “The Pioneers.” The major was initially called Community and Environmental Planning.
CEP Tree Logo Created

First Colloquium
12 students, called “The Founders” were involved in designing the colloquium that was then developed into the CEP major.
